To the students in my cohort who hate the South
Though I am not in graduate school anymore, I can remember feeling this way!

Me:
My name is Laura Smith and I am a lot of things: daughter, sister, friend, student affairs practitioner, baker, and lover of all things Zebra. Though I am very proud of all the things that I am, at my very core I am a woman from the South. I have always felt that there was something special about being part of the legacy of southern women. In the words of Miranda Lambert, "I've been saved by the grace of a southern charm."

So I saw this on Facebook and this southern girl could not help but blog about it!
Whoever made this picture is probably not southern because it makes us southern belles look like a bunch of idiots. Second, while some of the points are fact, some of this stuff is just not true!
First of all no self respecting southern girl would show up to a football game wearing a dress that was not in the school colors. At Carolina you get the side eye if you show up in red instead of Garnet. Second, the statement “For the guys, its football, for her its a fashion show” is bogus. For me and most of my southern girl friends its about football, fashion, and who can make the best tailgate food!
Other than these two blatant mistakes, I can get behind the rest of the this image. I have been known to tease my hair to a little on the high side and I use a koozie every day. I guess its in the blood!
And thats the truth according to the southern girl ;)
So I have been out of touch for a few days due to my sisters wedding and I just saw this one! This is totally what I felt like the last day of orientation advisement when there weren’t any classes left for my students to take!!!

So some may think I’m silly, but I am so sad that Andy Griffith died today. I also know that some of you might be thinking… who is Andy Griffith?
Well to me he represents my childhood! He is best know for his role as Sheriff Andy Taylor in the Andy Griffith Show, which was on the air in the 1960’s, but it has been on TV in reruns all my life. I have probably seen every episode. I would watch it with with my mother and grandmother everyday as a child.
The show portrayed a somewhat exaggerated version of small town southern living, but it also taught me lessons about values, friendship, and how to treat others. As far as I am concerned Andy Griffith was the embodiment of all that was good, clean, and honest about this world we live in.
I suggest that any of you who have never seen the Andy Griffith Show take some time to watch a few episodes. You can watch full episodes on YouTube. I have provided a link below to my favorite episode “Barney and the Choir.”

We’ll miss you Andy!
So one of my favorite things in the world are birthdays! Now I am really not fond of the whole getting older part of birthdays (like most southern girls), so this year I have decided to celebrate without getting any older. From now on if anybody asks me I am in my mid-twenties.. no numbers!
Well anyway, I am super excited because some of my favorite people in Cola are helping me celebrate this weekend. I have an awesome pink dress to wear that would make Barbie herself jealous and I going to bake myself a decadent birthday cake so it should be a great weekend. Pictures will follow!
So my project yesterday was a huge success! Paul and I had so much fun and I sent him back to his mom and dad unbroken and healthy. Here are a couple of pics of Paul hamming it up in the pool!
Today my Southern Girl project is going to be so much fun! I am going to hang out with one of the coolest 8 year olds ever! My friend and co-worker, Melissa, is brave enough to let me pick up her son from summer camp today and take him swimming at my pool. I am so excited! I went a little nuts in the summer section of the Dollar General picking up pool toys and floats. This is all great practice for when I am an aunt and can spoil my nieces and nephews rotten!!!
Yeah I have totally been that girl before! lol
